What should a site induction cover?

A site induction should cover the site rules and hours, the layout and traffic routes, welfare facilities, the fire alarm, escape routes and assembly point, first aid and accident reporting, protective equipment, permits, the risk assessments for the person's own work and known hazards such as asbestos. It should be recorded and signed by the person and by whoever gave it.

Last updated . Facts checked by the SiteSurvey team on 5 October 2026 against HSE: principal contractors' duties under CDM 2015, regulation 13 of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

Your team completes the site induction and training record on site in the SiteSurvey app on iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets. Every question in the site induction template

Site induction for a worker, contractor or new starter: topics covered, competence cards and training with expiry dates, PPE issued, questions and signatures. 4 sections and 31 questions. Follow-up questions and guidance appear only when an answer calls for them, so the person on site never sees the ones that do not apply.

Make it your own: every question is editable

This is a starting point, not a fixed form. Once it is in your SiteSurvey account you can reword any question, add or remove questions, sections and answer options, and add your own logo, so it fits the way your team works and the jobs you do.

Details you only enter once

Add this form to a project in SiteSurvey and it fills in what the project already knows, so nobody on site retypes it and every form on the job uses the same names. Anything filled in can still be changed.

Site induction FAQs

Is a site induction a legal requirement?

On construction sites, HSE says the principal contractor must ensure all workers have site-specific inductions, and any further information and training they need. Regulation 13 of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 requires the principal contractor to ensure a suitable site induction is provided. The form keeps a signed record for each person.

What if the person is under 18?

The form asks, and a yes shows a reminder. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, an employer must not employ a young person until its risk assessment has taken particular account of their inexperience, lack of awareness of risks and immaturity.

Does it work as a new starter checklist?

Yes. Choose company induction for a new starter. The topic list covers rules, welfare, fire, first aid, protective equipment, manual handling, hazardous substances and reporting, and you can add your own topics. The form can be edited for office or warehouse inductions.

How does it record training and competence cards?

One entry for each card, ticket or certificate seen, such as CSCS, IPAF, PASMA or first aid, with its number, expiry date and a photo. The form works out the days until each expires and flags one that has already expired.

What if the person does not speak English well?

The form asks whether the induction was given in a language they understand well. If not, it says to arrange a translation or an interpreter before they start work.

How do you check the induction was understood?

The form asks the person where the assembly point is and who to go to for first aid, and asks the person giving the induction whether they are satisfied it was understood. Both then sign. In the SiteSurvey app it works offline and syncs when the device is back online, and the record goes out as a PDF or a share link.
