Suggested controls: control measures for every hazard, ready to tick

Choose a hazard in a RAMS or risk assessment and the form offers its control measures as a tick list, written from HSE guidance and ranked by the hierarchy of controls. Tick what applies, say how it works on your job, and the form warns you if protective equipment is the only thing standing between the crew and the hazard. 25 hazards, 135 controls.

What are suggested controls?

Suggested controls are the control measures SiteSurvey offers for each hazard in a RAMS or risk assessment: pick a hazard and its controls appear as a tick list, from removing the hazard down to personal protective equipment. You tick what applies and write how it applies on the job. They come from a library of 135 controls for 25 common hazards, each written from HSE guidance.

How it works on the form

  1. Likely hazards are suggested. From the type of work and the scope you wrote, the form lists the hazards that are likely on this job. Each drops off the list once you add it.
  2. Pick a hazard. The list of hazards matches the type of work: a roofer sees fragile roofs and hot works, an events crew sees rigging and crowds.
  3. Tick its controls. Only the controls for that hazard appear, most effective first. There is an Other box for anything the list does not have.
  4. Say how they apply. A second box asks how the controls work on this job: which edge, which scaffold, who checks it. That is what the crew is briefed from.
  5. Get warned. If only PPE is ticked, the form says so. In the RAMS, a hazard with no controls at all is counted as a point to resolve before the work starts.

Ranked by the hierarchy of controls

Every control in the library carries its level in the hierarchy of controls, the order UK law and HSE guidance use: remove the hazard first, then reduce it, then guard it, then manage how the work is done, and use protective equipment last. The lists in the form follow that order, so the strongest options are the first ones you see. The hierarchy of controls explained.

  • Eliminate

Take the hazard away altogether, usually by doing the job a different way or from a different place.

    13 controls in the library

  • Substitute

Swap the hazard for something less harmful: a quieter tool, a cold-applied method, a smaller pack.

    7 controls in the library

  • Engineering control

Keep people away from the hazard with a physical measure: a guardrail, a barrier, extraction, isolation.

    30 controls in the library

  • Administrative control

Change the way the work is done: a permit, a check, training, supervision, timing.

    72 controls in the library

  • Personal protective equipment

Protect the person as the last line: a harness, hard hat, gloves or respirator. Never the only control.

Common questions

Are the suggested controls a risk assessment?

No. They are a starting point written from HSE guidance for each hazard, so nothing obvious is missed. The assessment is still yours: tick only what applies, add anything the list does not have, write how the controls work on this job, and score the risk. The form says this on the page, and the controls box is there so the RAMS describes your site rather than a generic one.

Which forms have it?

The RAMS template and the risk assessment template in the form library have the tick list today, and any copy you add to your account keeps it. When you build or edit a safety form with the AI form builder, it can add the same hazard list and control tick list, with the PPE warning, to your own form.

Why does the form warn me about PPE?

Because protective equipment is the last option in the hierarchy of controls. It only protects the wearer, only when worn properly, and it does nothing to the hazard. If the only controls ticked for a hazard are PPE, the form shows a warning asking you to look again for a way to remove, replace or guard the hazard, or to record why that is not reasonably practicable.

Can I add controls that are not on the list?

Yes. Every list has an Other box for your own control, and the box beside it is where you write how the controls apply on the job. Library controls are kept short and general on purpose; your own words make them specific.
