What does a fire warden check?

A fire warden checks that fire exits are unlocked and clear, escape routes are free of obstruction, fire doors are closed and not wedged open, call points and extinguishers are in place, fire exit signs and emergency lighting are working, there is no build-up of rubbish or combustibles, there are no electrical hazards, and the assembly point is clear. Problems are recorded and passed on to be fixed.

Every question in the fire warden checklist template

A fire warden or fire marshal walk-round: area, exits and escape routes, fire doors, call points, extinguishers, signs, emergency lighting, housekeeping, PEEPs and wardens on shift, with photos and actions. 4 sections and 58 questions. Follow-up questions and guidance appear only when an answer calls for them, so the person on site never sees the ones that do not apply.

Make it your own: every question is editable

This is a starting point, not a fixed form. Once it is in your SiteSurvey account you can reword any question, add or remove questions, sections and answer options, and add your own logo, so it fits the way your team works and the jobs you do.

Details you only enter once

Fire warden checklist FAQs

Are fire wardens a legal requirement?

The Fire Safety Order requires the responsible person to appoint one or more competent people to help with the fire safety measures, and to nominate enough competent people to carry out the evacuation procedures. Fire wardens are one way to meet these duties.

How often should the checks be done?

The law does not set a frequency for warden walk-rounds; the responsible person decides, in line with the fire risk assessment. The form records whether it is a daily, weekly, monthly or pre-event check.

What about people who need help to evacuate?

The form asks whether PEEPs are up to date for anyone who needs help, and whether visitors and contractors know the fire procedure.

Can I add photos of problems?

Yes. Photograph blocked exits or wedged doors so the problem is clear to whoever fixes it.

How are problems followed up?

Add each one as an action with an owner, a due date and a status (open, in progress or completed).

Who uses this?

Fire wardens and marshals in offices, shops, warehouses, schools and healthcare. GOV.UK explains who the responsible person is and what they must do.
