Cable test report template

A test and handover record for copper and fibre network cabling. Record the cabling category, the tester and its calibration date, whether you tested permanent links or channels, and the test limit. Enter the links tested and passed first time and the form shows the pass rate; add each failure with its fault, fix and retest, and who will finish any outstanding work. Record the fibre results, attach the tester reports and rack photos, confirm the handover documents and warranty registration, and get the client's signature. Every question is listed below, and you can fill the live form in on this page.

What should a cable test report include?

A cable test report should state the cabling category, the tester and its calibration date, the test configuration (permanent link or channel) and limit, the number of links tested and passed, each failure with the fault and retest result, fibre loss against the budget, and the full tester results. Handover usually also includes as-built drawings, a labelling schedule and the manufacturer's warranty registration.

Every question in the cable test report template

A structured cabling test and handover record: cabling category, tester and calibration, permanent link or channel, links tested and passed, failures and retests, fibre results, labelling, drawings and warranty. 3 sections and 46 questions. Follow-up questions and guidance appear only when an answer calls for them, so the person on site never sees the ones that do not apply.

Make it your own: every question is editable

This is a starting point, not a fixed form. Once it is in your SiteSurvey account you can reword any question, add or remove questions, sections and answer options, and add your own logo, so it fits the way your team works and the jobs you do.

Details you only enter once

Add this form to a project in SiteSurvey and it fills in what the project already knows, so nobody on site retypes it and every form on the job uses the same names. Anything filled in can still be changed.

  • GuidanceA permanent link is the permanently installed part of the cabling, from the connector at the patch panel to the outlet. A channel adds the patch cords and equipment cords at each end, so a channel result covers the cords that were in place when it was tested.
  • Test limit used (for example ISO/IEC or TIA Cat6A permanent link)Short answer
  • GuidanceCabling classes and categories come from BS EN 50173-1 and ISO/IEC 11801-1 (generic cabling for customer premises). Testing of installed cabling follows BS EN 50346, with ISO/IEC 14763-2 for planning and installation and ISO/IEC 14763-3 for testing optical fibre cabling. Copper field testers measure to IEC 61935-1. Use the test limit the client specification names, and check what the manufacturer warranty needs: most want full saved results from a calibrated tester.

Cable test report FAQs

Permanent link or channel?

A permanent link is the permanently installed part of the cabling, from the connector at the patch panel to the outlet. A channel adds the patch cords and equipment cords at each end, so a channel result covers the cords that were in place when it was tested.

Does it work out the pass rate?

Yes. Enter the links tested and passed first time and the form shows the percentage, counts any links still failing after retest, and asks who will finish them and by when.

Do I need to attach the tester results?

Yes. Attach the tester's reports or screenshots. If a manufacturer's warranty is being registered, check which results it needs and who may submit them, and check the client's specification.

Does it cover fibre?

Yes. Record the cores tested and the worst loss against the loss budget.

Which standard covers field testing?

IEC 61935-1 sets the measurement procedures and the field tester accuracy for testing installed balanced (copper) cabling against the parameters in ISO/IEC 11801 or an equivalent cabling standard. Record the test limit you used.

Who uses this?

Data cabling installers, AV and IT contractors, electrical contractors and IT managers.
