Heat pump commissioning checklist

A commissioning record for an air or ground source heat pump. Scan the data plate, record the refrigerant and whether F gas work was done on site, then the flush, inhibitor and pressure, design and measured flow and return temperatures, weather compensation and balancing. Record the cylinder set point and pasteurisation cycle, the MCS certificate, the maximum demand and DNO notification, and the handover. Every question is listed below, and you can fill the live form in on this page.

What is checked when a heat pump is commissioned?

Heat pump commissioning checks that the system has been flushed and treated, the pressure is right, the flow temperature matches the design, the flow to return difference is as expected, weather compensation is set, emitters are balanced and hot water is stored safely. The installer then creates the MCS certificate, notifies the DNO and shows the customer how to use the controls.

Last updated . Facts checked by the SiteSurvey team on 17 October 2026 against MCS: notifying DNOs, MCS: a compliance reminder for MCS certificates (14 days after commissioning), GOV.UK: Boiler Upgrade Scheme, how to apply, HSE: hot and cold water systems, things to consider (legionella) and GOV.UK: qualifications required to work on equipment containing F gas.

Every question in the heat pump commissioning template

A heat pump commissioning record: unit and refrigerant, system pressure and flushing, flow and return temperatures, weather compensation, hot water and pasteurisation, MCS certificate, DNO and handover. 4 sections and 59 questions. Follow-up questions and guidance appear only when an answer calls for them, so the person on site never sees the ones that do not apply.

Make it your own: every question is editable

Heat pump commissioning FAQs

When is the MCS certificate due?

MCS requires the certificate to be created no later than 14 days after the commissioning date. Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants go through MCS certified installers, who apply on the customer's behalf. The form records the certificate number, its date and the voucher reference, and warns when the certificate is more than 14 days late.

Does the DNO need to know about a heat pump?

Yes. MCS says every heat pump installation must be notified. Where the property's new maximum demand is 60 A or less, you can connect and notify the DNO within 28 days of the installation; between 60 A and 100 A, apply before installing. The form records the maximum demand and route and warns when notification is late.

What hot water temperature is safe?

HSE says hot water should be stored at 60°C or higher to kill legionella bacteria. The form records the cylinder set point and warns when it is below 60°C without a regular pasteurisation cycle.

What is the flow to return difference?

The form works out the difference between the measured flow and return temperatures. Compare it with the system design to check the flow rate and the emitters.

What about split systems?

GOV.UK says anyone installing a heat pump system that contains F gas needs an F gas qualification, and the company needs F gas certification. The form asks for the certificate number when refrigerant work was done on site.

Who uses this?

MCS heat pump installers, heating engineers and housing providers commissioning heat pumps across their stock.
