Solar panel condition visual inspection

Show array identity, panel faces, frame edges and a final location view without touching electrical equipment.

Hold to record. Keep holding while you film and speak; release to save the clip and its transcribed answer.

Four 9:16 example clips generated in Google Flow. Fictional inspection; no customer site is shown.

App-style example using Google Flow footage. The animated recording interface and gradually appearing words are scripted; no real inspection or live transcription took place.

What can a solar panel condition visual inspection record?

Confirm array or row reference and permitted access route. Film a wide view before accessible panel faces and frame edges. Do not touch live equipment, walk on modules or access a roof without the required work-at-height controls. Phone video cannot measure output, insulation, hotspots, microcracks, earthing or electrical safety. It records visible appearance only and cannot replace O&M testing or a competent inspection.

The guided route

Start wide. Then show the detail.

Confirm array or row reference and permitted access route. Film a wide view before accessible panel faces and frame edges. Do not touch live equipment, walk on modules or access a roof without the required work-at-height controls.

01

Array identity and safe route

Show the row from a permitted ground-level route and record its reference separately.

Example observation
“A staged ground-mounted solar row is shown; actual row identity is fictional.”
Scripted example, not a real finding.
02

Visible module surfaces

Film accessible glass surfaces from a safe distance, noting visible cracks, soiling or shading without touching modules.

Example observation
“Panel faces are shown; hidden cell condition and output are unknown.”
Scripted example, not a real finding.
03

Frame and mounting context

Show accessible frame edges and support context without probing fixings or wiring.

Example observation
“An exposed frame edge is illustrated; fixings and strength are not tested.”
Scripted example, not a real finding.
04

Final view and access limits

Return to a wide location view, noting panels not seen or inaccessible.

Example observation
“A final staged array view is recorded; coverage is partial.”
Scripted example, not a real finding.

How to use the record

Make the visual evidence useful.

Identify the visit

Record the asset or site, visit stage, date and inspector. Keep each clip attached to its point and note anything inaccessible.

Describe, then escalate

Say what the camera shows and where it is. Record the next action without guessing the cause or declaring a specialist result from video.

Inspection scope

Phone video cannot measure output, insulation, hotspots, microcracks, earthing or electrical safety. It records visible appearance only and cannot replace O&M testing or a competent inspection.

Questions, answered

Solar panel condition visual inspection FAQs

Can phone footage diagnose a solar panel fault?

No. Electrical and performance faults need suitable monitoring and competent testing.

Should an inspector climb onto a roof for better footage?

Only under a properly planned and controlled work-at-height process. A phone route should use an already safe authorised position.

Can visible glass condition prove a module is undamaged?

No. Internal cells, wiring and hotspots may not be visible.

What should a suspected defect record include?

A clear row or module location, wide context, close visible view and an explicit referral for competent follow-up.

Sources and review

Guidance checked 9 October 2026. The four-point route is a SiteSurvey example, not a method prescribed by these sources.

  1. Solar Energy UK · O&M best practice manual ↗

Recommends visual panel condition checks, reporting damaged modules and planning cleaning with site health and safety considerations.

  2. HSE · Assessing all work at height ↗

Requires risk assessment and safe planning where height work is needed, with avoidance of height work where practicable.
